Leading Edge Computers is a proud partner of the Sony Foundation’s You Can Campaign

The You Can campaign is a nationwide appeal for all Australians to donate their old mobile phones. The mobile phones are then recycled or refurbished and resold. Leading Edge Computer stores have set up mobile phone collection bins in store – and every phone donated helps the fight against youth cancer.

Funds raised will be used to build specialised youth cancer centres across Australia. Currently, cancer is the biggest disease killer of our teenagers and because there are no specialized services or facilities, the chance of surviving certain cancers decreases by 50% the day you turn 16. Building youth cancer centres will improve this situation immediately.

You can learn more about the You Can campaign by visiting www.youcan.org.au for more information.

Leading Edge Group Supports the Indigenous Literacy Project For 5 Years

The Indigenous Literacy Project (ILP) is a partnership between the Australian Book Industry and The Fred Hollows Foundation that raises funds to purchase and supply books and other culturally appropriate material to remote communities across Australia.

They started in 2004 with a simple question:  What could they do to help address the current literacy crisis in remote indigenous communities? They were motivated by a  deep concern that illiteracy in many of these communities was a common and critical barrier to the kind of full, healthy and happy life many of us take for granted.

The project has continued to expand in scope and reach. Therese Rein is now patron, and the cornerstone of the project’s fundraising platform is Indigenous Literacy Day, which has become a major event on the calendar for independent bookshops and book lovers nationwide.

Leading Edge Group is very proud to have contributed $6,000 in 2011 to this important and extremely successful project which is having an enormous and beneficial impact on lives of indigenous children.

Leading Edge Video supporting Starlight Children’s Foundation

Leading Edge Video is a proud supporter of ‘Starlight Video Month’ each year to help brighten the lives of seriously ill and hospitalised children.

For the 16th consecutive year, the Australian Video Industry and the Starlight Children’s Foundation have joined forces for Starlight Video Month with the goal of raising over $300,000 to ensure Captain Starlight can visit as many hospitalised children throughout Australia in the ‘Starlight Express’ Van.

This year, World renowned preschool entertainers, Hi-5 are the patron of Starlight Video Month, “We are over the moon to be supporting Starlight as we’ve seen first hand the value of the work they do in the hospitals - the difference Captain Starlight makes to help these children through really difficult times is just phenemonal.  Please support the local video stores in your area during the month of October by renting a new release DVD marked with the Starlight Video Month logo to help put more smiles onto the faces of seriously ill kids,” said Nathan Foley from Hi-5.

Seriously ill children living in regional and remote areas faces enormous challenges such as extended periods away from home for treatment, emotional hardship and isolation from their friends and family.  However, a visit from Captain Starlight with interactive Hi-Tec equipment such as Play Stations, Nintendo Wii’s, Sing Star, the latest movies, face painting, arts and crafts, magic shows, balloon sculpting offers them the chance to escape to a world of fun and laughter, so they can forget about their pain, loneliness and boredom.

“It is tough for any seriously ill child but often even harder when a child is ill for long periods in a remote or regional hospital that has less dedicated facilities to distract and entertain them. Funds raised from Starlight Video Month are vital to keep the Starlight Express Van program operating, and ensure that Captain Starlight can continue to deliver fun and laughter to seriously ill and hospitalised children in this region and across the country,” Anne Johnston, Head of Marketing, Starlight Children’s Foundation.

Leading Edge Telecoms Help Kids Beat Isolation

Cure Our Kids corporate partnership with Leading Edge Telecoms have helped make 15 year-old Anne and 15 year-old Jake time in isolation a whole lot more bearable, by providing them free wireless internet cards. Anne, who was diagnosed with a brain Tumour, and Jake, who has recently undergone a bone marrow transplant to help overcome High Risk Leukaemia, are now able to stay in contact with the outside world while their treatment continues.

The support Leading Edge Telecoms has provided allows the two patients to now download movies and music, keep up-to-date with their schoolwork and most importantly, stay in touch with friends and family. Remaining socially connected is important for the psychological wellbeing of children and teens undergoing treatment for cancer.
